The West Philadelphia Cooperative School was founded on the idea that it takes a community to raise secure, healthy children, and that families from all backgrounds and walks of life deserve quality, affordable childcare. We aim to create an inclusive and mutually supportive community that is representative of, and responsive to, the diversity of West Philadelphia. The teachers and families in the cooperative partner together to create a rich, creative, and sensitive learning community for our children. Our goal is to give each child the opportunity to learn, play, express their thoughts and feelings, and feel heard in ways that are meaningful to them.
“WHEN CHILDREN ARE ALLOWED TO TAKE RISKS, THEY MAKE MEANINGFUL DISCOVERIES. TEACHERS AT WPCS GIVE CHILDREN THE FREEDOM TO GET MESSY AND EXPERIMENT WITH MATERIALS IN WAYS THAT EMPOWER THEM TO DIRECT THEIR OWN LEARNING. BY TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR RISKS, CHILDREN LEARN TO TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES AND OTHERS AND TO SOLVE PROBLEMS INDEPENDENTLY.”- TEACHER EMILY
